Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. Matthew 6:19-20
I don’t think this should be translated into modern
vernacular ‘Don’t have a retirement account’ or ‘Live on only what hasn’t been
stored up.’ If that were the case, I
think that the rest of the Bible would look very different. But this is confusing, especially to Americans
who are seeped in materialism.
In Ephesians and Colossians, Paul addresses slaves
individually and tells them similar things.
Check it out:
Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do, whether they are slave or free. Ephesians 6:7-8
Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters, since you know that you will receive an inheritance from the Lord as a reward. It is the Lord Christ you are serving. Colossians 3:23-24
Serve your master as though you were serving Christ. Christ will reward you for whatever good you
do, and that reward will be in heaven.
It’s going to be awesome, and it can never be destroyed.
Let’s be a family that lives for the rewards coming in
heaven, not the latest product. Let’s be
thankful for the things we have and then use them in wily ways to rack up more
points in heaven.
